In energy, Quality is high stakes. When assets or systems fail, the consequences can impact safety, people, the environment, and business – affecting reputation and market confidence.

At Shell, there was an opportunity to strengthen how Quality was understood across the organisation. While Quality Practitioners were embedded within project teams to provide specialist expertise, its broader value wasn’t always recognised. The approach to Quality also varied depending on the practitioner and location.

In 2017, we began a cultural change journey with Shell Quality to change that – strengthening the function while raising its profile on a global scale.

Creating a community

We brought together over 100 Quality Practitioners from across Shell globally. Together, they defined a single, shared definition of Quality – what it is in practice, the role it plays, and how it should show up every day. We designed a set of values: versatile, insightful, and proactive, known as VIP.

With these foundations in place, we selected a group of Quality Champions who were passionate about Quality to embed the values across Shell. As an incentive, we introduced the VIP awards and Quality Recognition Awards, challenging the community to submit projects ...
